For this year’s spring community service event, Windward took care of some much-needed mulching and weeding at West Seattle’s Delridge Wetland Park. In cooperation with experts from the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA), our staff helped remove more than 2,000 square feet of invasive weeds – even the weather cooperated! It was a great opportunity to see how land formerly occupied by an electricity substation can be transformed into a functioning wetland that is an integral part of its environment. Long-term plans for the park include the creation of an urban garden, community orchard, and an outdoor classroom for local students and the community to learn hands-on environmental science and wetland stewardship.
